• Carrefour celebrated International Plastic Bag Free Day by providing customers with eco-friendly alternative bags on the occasion day

  • The brand will be replacing single-use plastic bags at checkout counters across all stores in Egypt

Cairo, Egypt, 7 July 2022: Carrefour, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim in Egypt, continues its mission towards a plastic-free future by introducing sustainable alternatives to plastic bags at checkout counters, encouraging customers to lead a life free of single-use plastic. Carrefour Egypt will be phasing out single-use plastic bags from its stores by the end of 2022.  This initiative, announced as part of Carrefour’s celebration of International Plastic Bag Free Day, is in alignment with Majid Al Futtaim’s company-wide pledge to stop single-use plastic across its operations by 2025.

In addition to implementing eco-friendly shopping bags across its stores in Egypt, Carrefour distributed more than 10 thousand reusable bags on the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3. Carrefour also introduced an in-store initiative at select branches, providing customers with the opportunity to personalise their own reusable eco-friendly bag at a printing booth, for free.

Carrefour provided a variety of free reusable bags at different sizes and unique designs for customers who spent more than EGP 500 across all supermarkets and hypermarkets. This encourages visitors to shop responsibly, whilst offering them with a variety of choices. For one week, Carrefour incentivised MyCLUB customers with extra loyalty points when they use or buy the eco-friendly bags. To date, 300,000 points have been provided and the leading retailer expects to reach 600,000 points by end of the week.

Philippe Peguilhan, Country Manager of Carrefour Egypt at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, commented, “We are incredibly excited to be announcing our latest plastic-free initiatives, showcasing our unwavering commitment to ensuring a greener future for our community. Carrefour is taking positive steps towards eliminating single-use plastic altogether by 2025 as we start phasing out plastic bags across our Egyptian stores by the end of 2022. Today marks an important step closer towards the creation of a circular economy in line with our sustainability strategy ‘Dare Today, Change Tomorrow’.”
