As the General Manager of Sheraton, Mall of the Emirates, I have had a remarkable journey in the hospitality industry, particularly in the Food and Beverage (F&B) sector. I feel it is important to share my story and shed light on the experiences that have shaped me as a leader, while also inspiring fellow females who aspire to break into F&B and lead the future. In such a male dominant industry as this, it is important that women are also given their opportunity to shine, and I firmly believe that the future is bright for these young leaders of tomorrow.

What initially drew me to the world of F&B was the opportunity to create memorable experiences for guests through the art of culinary craftsmanship. I have always been passionate about food and its power to bring people together. My inspirations come from the rich cultural tapestry of my Indian heritage and the diverse cuisines that I encountered throughout my life. It was this deep connection with food that pushed me to explore a career in F&B.

Entering the F&B industry as a woman was not without its challenges. In a male-dominated field, I had to find ways to stand out and prove my worth. I focused on honing my skills, continuously learning, and demonstrating a relentless work ethic. I embraced every opportunity to take on new responsibilities and pushed myself to excel. By doing so, I gradually earned the respect and recognition of my peers and superiors, and eventually became a leader in my own right.

Challenging the status quo has been an integral part of my journey. I firmly believe that diversity and inclusivity are vital for the growth and success of any industry. To my fellow females aspiring to make their mark in F&B, I would say this: Have confidence in your abilities, embrace your uniqueness, and never be afraid to voice your ideas and opinions. Surround yourself with a strong support system, seek out mentors who believe in your potential, and relentlessly pursue your goals.

The Middle East, with its vibrant F&B landscape, offers immense opportunities and excitement. It is here that OAnjo, the Portuguese and Japanese fusion restaurant, has captured my imagination. The concept beautifully intertwines two cultures with a shared history dating back to the 16th century. OAnjo pays homage to the trading connection between Portugal and Japan, creating a culinary experience that blends their distinct flavours and traditions. It is a testament to the innovation and creativity that thrive in the Middle East’s F&B scene.

What truly makes me realise the full potential of the F&B industry in the Middle East is the continuous evolution and adaptation that I witness on a daily basis. The region has embraced diverse cuisines and concepts, nurturing a melting pot of flavours and experiences for diners. The F&B landscape here thrives on innovation, offering endless opportunities for talented individuals to shine and with such a wide array of nationalities calling Dubai home, it is no wonder that the city is ever evolving in the F&B options that it offers.

As I reflect on my journey and the experiences that have shaped me, I am filled with gratitude for the support and mentorship I have received. I firmly believe in paying it forward, which is why I am actively involved in mentoring other women in career leadership programs. Together, we can break barriers, empower one another, and create a more inclusive and diverse F&B industry.

To the aspiring female leaders, I urge you to embrace your passions, leverage your strengths, and challenge the norms. With determination, perseverance, and the right support, you can carve your path in the F&B industry and lead the future with excellence.

As we move forward, let us continue to celebrate diversity, foster inclusivity, and create a legacy that inspires the generations to come. The future of F&B in the Middle East is bright, and together, we can make it even brighter.
