How did the idea of implementing a 5 day work week come about, and what were the key motivations behind it?

The idea of implementing a 5-day work week really stemmed from our core values as a company, where we emphasize not just excellence in service and culinary experience, but also the well-being and satisfaction of our team. We’ve always been keen observers of global work trends and deeply cared about creating a positive, sustainable work environment. The key motivation behind this decision was our belief in the power of work-life balance. We recognize that our team members are not just employees; they are individuals with families, passions, and pursuits outside their professional lives. By moving towards a 5-day work week, we aim to acknowledge their hard work and dedication in a meaningful way, giving them more time to recharge, spend time with loved ones, and pursue personal interests. We believe that a happier, more balanced team is the key to creativity, productivity, and ultimately, the success of our business,  it’s simply the right thing to do and I hope many others follow suit.

What specific challenges or concerns regarding employee mental health led to the decision to adopt this new work schedule?

In the dynamic food and beverage industry, our operations are always in high gear, propelled by the indefatigable spirit and high energy of our team—a quality that’s palpable to anyone visiting our outlets. Each day, they set their sights on perfection, navigating through the intensity and extended hours inherent to our field. Yet, in an environment where the stakes are substantial and the work demanding, the shadow of burnout looms large. Our staff, whose commitment routinely surpasses expectations, needs more than mere accolades; they require genuine support. In response, we’ve innovated our work schedule, crafting an environment that allows our team members the essential time to refresh and recalibrate. This initiative transcends the allure of impressive titles or sweeping declarations; it’s rooted in a commitment to mutual care and ensuring every individual can achieve their best without compromising their health or spirits.

Can you elaborate on how RMAL plans to ensure that productivity and efficiency are maintained despite the reduced work hours?

To maintain productivity, and efficiency with reduced hours, we plan to optimize shift schedules to match peak hours, cross-train staff for greater agility, and invest in technology to streamline operations. We’ll closely monitor performance to swiftly address issues, while also prioritizing employee well-being to boost engagement and productivity. While this initiative will have an initial  cost to the company, we believe over the long run, it will provide returns in terms of increased retention, and attracting the most talented employees, which will contribute to more sales. Our motivation for this initiative was not financial, but we are confident this initiative will also impact our bottom lines positively over time.

How do you anticipate the 5 day work week impacting employee morale and overall job satisfaction?

The transition to a 5-day work week is anticipated to significantly enhance employee morale and overall job satisfaction. This change naturally provides employees with more personal time to rest, engage in hobbies, spend time with family, and manage personal commitments, contributing to a healthier work-life balance. Such a balance is crucial for mental and physical health, reducing stress and preventing burnout. Additionally, increased morale often leads to higher levels of engagement and productivity when employees are at work.

In what ways do you believe this initiative will positively influence the company’s brand image and reputation within the food and beverage industry?

This initiative underscores our commitment to employee well-being and sets us apart as an employer that values work-life balance. By prioritizing the welfare of our team members, we not only enhance our brand image but also attract top talent and strengthen our reputation as a socially responsible company within the food and beverage industry.

How does RMAL intend to measure the success of this new work schedule in terms of both employee well-being and business performance?

We will employ a multifaceted approach to measure the success of the new work schedule. This includes regular feedback sessions with employees to gauge their satisfaction and well-being, tracking key performance indicators related to productivity and efficiency, and conducting periodic assessments to evaluate the overall impact on business performance. Additionally, we will monitor employee retention rates and recruitment metrics to assess the initiative’s long-term effectiveness.

How do you envision the 5 day work week aligning with RMAL’s broader goals and values as a company?

At RMAL, we are committed to creating a positive and inclusive work culture that prioritizes the well-being and development of our team members. The introduction of a 5-day work week aligns perfectly with this ethos by providing our employees with greater flexibility, autonomy, and opportunities for personal growth. By fostering a healthier and happier workforce, we not only enhance employee satisfaction but also drive sustainable business success in the long run.
